Time For A Change – You Bet It Is! But… January 19, 2009

The excitement has been growing since election day. A new president; a new regime in Washington DC. Millions of people are expected to be in DC over the next few days to witness this next phase in United States history. Maybe your candidate won, maybe he didn’t. Regardless of your politics, you can’t ignore the buzz.
But at the same time, we are seeing record unemployment. Every day, more companies (large & small) are laying off more workers. In some cases, pay and/or benefits are being cut. Foreclosures are at all time highs. 401K plans are evaporating and many that were close to retirement are now rethinking their plans. Businesses are closing. Food costs more. Medical care costs more. Gas prices are back on the upward slope. $700B bailout. Yes, that’s B as in Billions! Again, you can’t ignore the buzz.
Will tomorrow’s inauguration fix the economic problems we continue to face? The president-elect has made promises and has plans, although very little specifics have surfaced. He has also warned the American public that it will not be an overnight fix. But based on what I hear in the halls at work, in the gym and on the subway, I don’t think people are listening. It really seems that people think that within a week of the inauguration, the new president will wave a magic wand or pull a rabbit out of his hat and all will be good.
Sorry to burst any bubbles, but there is no magic wand, no rabbit. Let’s be honest. We didn’t get in this position overnight. We didn’t even get in this position in the past 8 years under George Bush. It’s been building and churning for a long time. Back in my college days (yes, that was over 25 years ago), credit card companies were giving college students credit cards even if they did not have any source of income. Houses were bought because they were investments, not homes. The “standard” of living grew to include multiple cars, TVs, computers, video games and many other high ticket items. It didn’t matter if you could afford to buy something or not – you could charge it. I’m not criticizing because I’ve also bought into it all.
So yes, it’s time for a change. But that change has to start with each one of us. A change in our hearts. A change in our spending and saving habits. A change in our actions. A change in our concern for each other. A change in returning to core values. A change in making family and friends part of our daily lives. A change in making spiritual beliefs and religion a focus. I honestly believe if we each start making those changes, we will see the country make that bigger change we all hope for.
Advent – For Me, a Time to Learn, Focus and Reflect November 30, 2008

I didn’t grow up Catholic – I was born and raised Lutheran. And while my parents and I went to church every Sunday, there wasn’t a lot of discussion about religion other than that. I never really picked up on the significance of Advent.
I converted to Catholicism about 20 years ago, and even at that, I feel like I’ve taken Advent for granted. While I understand the basic premise and some of the symbolism, I haven’t given it the right amount of attention and focus. The great news is that doing so should be very easy – between resources at my local parish and all of the on-line resources (see below for a couple of good ones), all it will take is … time. So if you’re in the same boat, I hope you’ll join me this Advent and make it a time for personal and spiritual growth.
Also, big thanks to fellow plurker, The Curt Jester (aka Jeffrey Miller) for graciously sharing his Advent Wreath.

Decorating for Christmas November 29, 2008

The process has started.
- Outside lights are done – I had to do those early because of the weather forecast. And of course, because the bushes are bigger and some strings failed, I need to get some more lights to really finish it up. But it is functional and it does look nice.
- Wreaths are up in all the windows. Easier this year because we’ve rearranged the furniture in two of the rooms.
- The big tree is up and lights are on. Diane will hang the ornaments – she has a much better eye for that than I do.
- Boxes have been lugged out of the attic – my least favorite job. This year, we went thru the boxes with Allison so she’d have Christmas decorations for her apartment also.
So now the transformation begins.
- Almost every room in the house undergoes the change. The “normal everyday” stuff gets put away – usually in the Christmas boxes and back in the attic.
- Furniture has been rearranged to make room for the Christmas tree.
- Holiday towels take the place of regular towels – fingertip towels in the bathroom and dishtowels in the kitchen
- Welcome mats replaced with the holiday mats.
- Banister will soon have garland wrapped around it.
- Move all of the Christmas CDs and DVDs to the front of the cabinets
- Smaller Christmas trees placed around the house – lighted of course.
- Stockings and stocking holders on the mantle.
Sounds like a lot of work? You bet it is!
Is it worth it? You bet it is!

Better late than never – and the iPhone 2.2 upgrade is definitely better. I finally got around to downloading and installing the upgrade – a week after it was released. Piece of cake – only took about 15 minutes from start to finish. From what I’ve read and heard, a few people have had some issues, but overall the upgrade is being well received. One thing noticeably missing – still no Cut & Paste. The new features are listed below:
- Enhancements to Maps
- Google Street View
- Public transit and walking directions
- Display address of dropped pins
- Share location via email - Decrease in call setup failures and dropped calls
- Enhancements to Mail
Resolved isolated issues with scheduled fetching of email
Improved formatting of wide HTML email - Podcasts are now available for download in iTunes application (over Wi-Fi and cellular network)
- Improved stability and performance of Safari
- Improved sound quality of Visual Voicemail messages
- Pressing Home button from any Home screen displays the first Home screen
- Preference to turn on/off auto-correction in Keyboard Settings
More details on some of the features:
Google Street View – Street View takes you on a virtual walking tour: Navigate street-level photographs of places you’ve located in Maps.
Public Transit and Walking Directions – Get walking directions, find public transit schedules, check fares, and estimate your travel time.
Share Location – Tap the Share Location button to send an email that includes a Google Maps URL.
Podcasts – Get access to millions of free podcasts on the iTunes Store via Wi-Fi or your cellular network.
Safari Improvements – A new search-friendly user interface, better performance, and more stability make Safari even easier to use.
Home Screen Shortcut – Take a shortcut from any Home screen back to your first Home screen by pressing the Home button.
Now that the hard part is done, I’m looking forward to digging deeper into each one of the features. Check back for updates.
Thanksgiving Thoughts November 26, 2008

What do you think of when you hear Thanksgiving? For a lot of us in the US, it’s a day dedicated to overeating, napping, football, family and friends. OK – at least that’s my vision of Thanksgiving. Maybe the Macy’s Day Parade? Or for some, it’s all about the strategic planning sessions on how to best tackle Black Friday.
But it’s also a day dedicated to giving thanks. Regardless of your religious beliefs, your political positions, your race, your sex, your age – we do have a lot to be thankful for. Thankful for our family and friends. Thankful for ALL of the food we have. Thankful for our health – good or bad, we’re still toughing it out. Thankful for our jobs, like ‘em or not. Thankful for all of our “stuff” (homes, cars, computers, gadgets, clothes, etc).
You may not think so, but you do. Odds are, there is someone out there having more problems than you are right now. Actually, if you’ve got the tools and technology to be reading this, you’re way ahead of the curve. There are more than a billion people who don’t have clean drinking water. 2.6 billion people don’t have basic sanitation. Over 3 billion people live on less than $2.50 a day (a grande latte at Starbucks is more than that). According to UNICEF, 26,500-30,000 children die each day due to poverty.
I’m not being preachy here, just realistic. To be honest, I’m doing some self-talk, because I too often forget these facts. It’s too easy for me to think about what I don’t have instead of what I do. I grumble about work. I grumble about traffic. I grumble about the fussy kid in the pew in front of me when I’m at church. I grumble about the people with 11 items in the 10 or less lane. Grumble, grumble, grumble. But I never have to worry about not having food or clean water. I never have to worry about sanitation. I never have to worry about not having clothes to protect me from the elements.
So take a break from today’s festivities, find some quiet time and take a few moments to give thanks for everything you’ve got. And while you’re at it, let’s all take those few moments each and every day to give thanks. That’s the first step…..many more to follow!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
Movie Review: Four Christmases (spoiler free) November 26, 2008

88 minutes of Reese Witherspoon, Vince Vaughn, and several extremely insane family members – how bad can it be. The plot is pretty simple: Due to weather, an unmarried couple is forced to scrap their “DINK” Christmas vacation to Fiji and instead visit all four parents in one day. Reese Witherspoon was cute as always. Vince Vaughn showed some moments of his classic, rapid style banter. There were some very funny scenes – more than just those on the commercials and in the trailer. There were also some very slow parts of the movie, but not a lot.
All in all, we found it to be basically an OK movie. Certainly not deep and thought-provoking. Not a continual laugh riot ala Wedding Crashers or Christmas Vacation. Very predictable, especially the ending. If you have some dysfunctional family issues, this may make you feel like your family is right out of Leave It To Beaver. It’s definitely worth a watch, if not in the theater, I’d add it to my NetFlix queue or pick it up when it hits Blockbuster.
Rated PG-13 for some sexual humor and language. Some may find the Christmas Nativity Play scene offensive.

In the past 2 weeks, we’ve had multiple calls every day reminding us to get out and vote in the December 2nd runoff election between Saxby Chamblis (R) and Jim Martin (D). And it’s amazing who’s been calling us. Sonny Purdue (the Governor of Georgia) called, then Mary Purdue (the gov’s wife) called a couple of weeks later. Fred Thompson (ex GOP Presidential candidate and star of Law & Order) called, as did Marty Klein, the executive director of the Georgia Republican Party.
John McCain was in Atlanta campaigning for Saxby – only a few days after he lost the Presidential election. I was disappointed he didn’t stop by. Rumor is that Sarah Palin may make an appearance for Saxby in Atlanta – I’m keeping my fingers crossed she’ll at least come by for a cup of coffee.
It’s been an ugly race and getting uglier by the day. I will vote on December 2nd, I just hope all my new phone buddies appreciate it.
Hello world! November 25, 2008

Welcome to my Blog – glad you stopped by! This is the first post of my first blog. It is, and will always be, a work in progress.
Why am I doing this? That’s an excellent question and I wish I had an excellent answer – but no such luck.
- This is not my job – far from the world of “bean counting”.
- I have absolutely no plans to make money doing this.
- I just checked and no one is holding a gun to my head saying “blog or I’ll shoot!”.
- I don’t really have a lot of free time.
- I honestly don’t have anything earth-shaking to blog about.
How often am I going to do this? Yet another excellent question with yet another lame answer. I’m hoping that once I get started, I’ll find it to be fun and enjoyable for me, and perhaps you. So I guess I’ll take it one day at a time and see how it goes.
What am I going to actually post on this? You probably already figured this out – excellent question and a “less than excellent” answer. To start out, I’m thinking I’ll try to capture my random thoughts and musings, as well as post links to things that interest me right now:
- Penn State Football
- Catholic Living
- Tech / Geek Stuff
- Funny Stuff – because we all need to try to keep our sense of humor right now
- Other things are interesting to me, but others may find totally useless.
So, that’s that. Post #1 of Blog #1 is officially done. Who knows where it’ll go from here? Not me!
